The key to solving the motor car problem is to create a means of transport that satisfies peoples' needs as the motor car now does, so removing the need to own a car. Most proposals to date have failed because they do not do this. This means the system must be able to cope with
taking kids to and from school
commuting to and from work
business trips around the country
weekly supermarket shopping
visits to main shopping areas
carrying consumer goods home
family, group or solo outings to theatres, pubs, zoos, parks, museums, libraries etc
holidays at a resort
touring holidays
fetching a grandparent for the weekend
DIY and garden centre shopping
taking rubbish to the dump
No public transport system can do all these things and so remove the goal of car ownership from people's agendas. And once a car is acquired and its fixed costs of ownership paid, its instant availability and convenience, with low additional use cost, make it the first choice for most travel.
