The key to solving the motor car problem is to create a means of transport that satisfies peoples' needs as the motor car now does, so removing the need to own a car. Most proposals to date have failed because they do not do this. This means the system must be able to cope with

  • taking kids to and from school

  • commuting to and from work

  • business trips around the country

  • weekly supermarket shopping

  • visits to main shopping areas

  • carrying consumer goods home

  • family, group or solo outings to theatres, pubs, zoos, parks, museums, libraries etc

  • holidays at a resort

  • touring holidays

  • fetching a grandparent for the weekend

  • DIY and garden centre shopping

  • taking rubbish to the dump

No public transport system can do all these things and so remove the goal of car ownership from people's agendas. And once a car is acquired and its fixed costs of ownership paid, its instant availability and convenience, with low additional use cost, make it the first choice for most travel.
